An augmented Becker–DeGroot–Marschak mechanism for transaction cycles
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce an augmented Becker–DeGroot–Marschak mechanism for the revelation of willingness-toaccept and willingness-to-pay in transaction cycles. The mechanism can be used to test for a behavioral anomaly. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Flexible valuations for consumer goods as measured by the Becker-DeGroot-Marschak mechanism
Economists have long been interested in mechanisms that lead to truthful revelation of the relative values individuals place on different goods. In this paper we take one of the most popular of such mechanisms, and show that valuations obtained using the Becker-DeGroot-Marschak (BDM) procedure depend on the distribution of prices presented to subjects when the mechanism is implemented. We show ...
متن کاملPrivate Valuation of a Public Good in Three Auction Mechanisms
We evaluate the impact of three auction mechanisms—the Becker-DeGroot-Marschak (BDM) mechanism, the second-price auction (SPA), and the random nth-price auction (NPA)—in the measurement of private willingness-to-pay and willingness-to-accept for a pure public good. Our results show that the endowment effect is lower with the BDM mechanism. In this market mechanism, the effect disappears after a...
متن کاملWillingness-to-pay for food safety: an experimental investigation of quality certification on bidding behaviour
We study the impact of new information about food safety on subjects’ willingnessto-pay for food products, in an experimental setting. We elicit prices using either a second price auction or the Becker-DeGroot-Marschak procedure. There are three stages of bidding. In stage 1, subjects bid for products without any information. In stage 2, public information about health impact is provided. In st...
متن کاملMisconceptions and Game Form Recognition of the BDM Method :
This study reports a simple experiment using induced-value items to assess the accuracy of the Becker, DeGroot, Marschak (BDM) method (1964 Behavioral Science) for measuring preferences. Although the BDM mechanism is incentive compatible the data indicate that it can be empirically unreliable due to susceptibility to subject misconceptions about the game form. The resulting choices appear to re...
متن کاملIncentives, Productivity and Selection in Labor Markets: Evidence from Rural Malawi∗
An observed positive relationship between compensation and productivity cannot distinguish between two channels: (1) an incentive effect and (2) a selection effect. We use a simplified Becker-Degroot-Marschak mechanism (BDM), which provides random variation in piece rates conditional on revealed reservation rates, to separately identify the two channels in the context of casual labor markets in...
